ChatGPT-5 and GPT-5 rumors: Expected release date, all we know so far
ChatGPT o1 is the new ‘strawberry’ model from OpenAI 5 prompts to try it out
The company says the app is an early version and is currently only available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users with a “full experience” set to come later this year. OpenAI denied reports that it is intending to release an AI model, code-named Orion, by December of this year. An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that they “don’t have plans to release a model code-named Orion this year,” but that leaves OpenAI substantial wiggle room. Here’s a timeline of ChatGPT product updates and releases, starting with the latest, which we’ve been updating throughout the year. ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022.
However, the deal was not favorable to some Stack Overflow users — leading to some sabotaging their answer in protest. OpenAI announced new updates for easier data analysis within ChatGPT. Users can now upload files ChatGPT App directly from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, interact with tables and charts, and export customized charts for presentations. The company says these improvements will be added to GPT-4o in the coming weeks.
At the same time, Altman says that new hardware is “far from my expertise,” as if he were already running ahead of potential rumors. On that note, it’s unclear whether OpenAI can raise the base subscription for ChatGPT Plus. I’d say it’s impossible right now, considering that Google also charges $20 a month for Gemini Advanced, which also gets you 2TB of cloud storage. Moreover, Google offers Pixel 9 buyers a free year of Gemini Advanced access.

“An important part of our mission is being able to make our advanced AI tools available to everyone for free,” including removing the need to sign up for ChatGPT. Rumors also point to a 3D and improved image model, so the question is whether, in addition to the updates to GPT-4 and ChatGPT, we’ll get a look at Sora, Voice Engine and more. OpenAI recently published a model rule book and spec, among the suggested prompts are those offering up real information including phone numbers and email for politicians. This would benefit from live access taken through web scraping — similar to the way Google works. Oh, and let’s not forget how important generative AI has been for giving humanoid robots a brain.
Based on the demos of ChatGPT-4o, improved voice capabilities are clearly a priority for OpenAI. ChatGPT-4o already has superior natural language processing and natural language reproduction than GPT-3 was capable of. So, it’s a safe bet that voice capabilities will become more nuanced and consistent in ChatGPT-5 (and hopefully this time OpenAI will dodge the Scarlett Johanson controversy that overshadowed GPT-4o’s launch). The only potential exception is users who access ChatGPT with an upcoming feature on Apple devices called Apple Intelligence. This new AI platform will allow Apple users to tap into ChatGPT for no extra cost. However, it’s still unclear how soon Apple Intelligence will get GPT-5 or how limited its free access might be.

When asked about the next steps for Dall-E 3, the image generator that’s part of ChatGPT, Altman was a bit vague. He promised that whatever comes next would be worth the wait but didn’t have any specific timelines to share. Perhaps the most interesting comment from Altman was about the future of AGI – artificial general intelligence.
- OpenAI introduced a new way to interact with ChatGPT called “Canvas.” The canvas workspace allows for users to generate writing or code, then highlight sections of the work to have the model edit.
- During the demo it was able to look at a graph and provide real feedback and information.
- Whether GPT-4o, Advanced Voice Mode, o1/strawberry, Orion, GPT-5, or something else, OpenAI has no choice but to deliver.
- It’s looking likely that the new model will be multimodal too — allowing it to take input from more than just text.
The new feature will let users bring up an old chat to remember something or pick back up a chat right where it was left off. No matter how advanced ChatGPT gets, hallucinations will be a persistent problem. However, SVP of Research Mark Chen attempted to shift the blame onto human error. These updates “had a much stronger response than we expected,” Altman told Bill Gates in January.
OpenAI plans to release its next big AI model by December
Currently, Altman explained to Gates, “GPT-4 can reason in only extremely limited ways.” GPT-5’s improved reasoning ability could make it better able to respond to complex queries and hold longer conversations. “Maybe the most important areas of progress,” Altman told Bill Gates, “will be around reasoning ability. GPT-5 is also expected to be more customizable than previous versions. But a significant proportion of its training data is proprietary — that is, purchased or otherwise acquired from organizations. Smarter also means improvements to the architecture of neural networks behind ChatGPT.
Google detailed a few exciting features that are not available from other genAI providers. This puts pressure on OpenAI to roll out a new ChatGPT upgrade very soon. Right now, with only 30 messages per week (I used half in a day), its a fun diversion but for most use cases GPT-4o is more than enough.
Scarlett Johansson has been invited to testify about the controversy surrounding OpenAI’s Sky voice at a hearing for the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation. In a letter, Rep. Nancy Mace said Johansson’s testimony could “provide a platform” for concerns around deepfakes. A new report from The Information, based on undisclosed financial information, claims OpenAI could lose up to $5 billion due to how costly the business is to operate.
ChatGPT is a general-purpose chatbot that uses artificial intelligence to generate text after a user enters a prompt, developed by tech startup OpenAI. The chatbot uses GPT-4, a large language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. The Atlantic and Vox Media have announced licensing and product partnerships with OpenAI. Both agreements allow OpenAI to use the publishers’ current content to generate responses in ChatGPT, which will feature citations to relevant articles.

It aims to bring human-level reasoning capability to ChatGPT and can solve complex math and programming problems. Now, a report by The Information confirms that OpenAI is indeed gearing up to integrate the Strawberry engine into ChatGPT. It will be able to do “more complex work,” according to Lightcap and will be “much more capable”. Essentially it will get a step closer to human levels of understanding.
- In May, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap predicted that “we will look back in a year and realize how laughably bad” previous versions of ChatGPT were.
- Now that GPT-4o gives free users many of the same capabilities that were only available behind a Plus subscription, the reasons to sign up for a monthly fee have dwindled — but haven’t disappeared completely.
- For example, I use ChatGPT for coding, writing and sometimes just for inspiration so I’ve told it which programming languages I’m proficient in and which I’m not.
- Beyond just the native tools and updates that GPT-4o is bringing to the table, it makes other tools to free users.
The Information says the expensive subscription would give users access to upcoming products. OpenAI has been working on two separate initiatives that have both leaked in recent months. GPT-4 was billed as being much faster and more accurate in its responses than its previous model GPT-3. OpenAI later in 2023 openai chatgpt 5 released GPT-4 Turbo, part of an effort to cure an issue sometimes referred to as “laziness” because the model would sometimes refuse to answer prompts. There is no specific timeframe when safety testing needs to be completed, one of the people familiar noted, so that process could delay any release date.
While ChatGPT was revolutionary on its launch a few years ago, it’s now just one of several powerful AI tools and has a lot of rivals that can perform just as well. A 2025 date may also make sense given recent news and controversy surrounding safety at OpenAI. In his interview at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman noted that there were about eight months between when OpenAI finished training ChatGPT-4 and when they released the model. Altman noted that that process “may take even longer with future models.” Regardless of what product names OpenAI chooses for future ChatGPT models, the next major update might be released by December. But this GPT-5 candidate, reportedly called Orion, might not be available to regular users like you and me, at least not initially.
It should be noted that as of this writing, not every feature appears available yet. The features are gradually launching over the coming weeks, but we don’t know when specific features will become available. Many believe that with Project Strawberry, OpenAI has reached Level 2 where AI systems can reason intelligently like humans. Reuters’ report suggests that Project Strawberry includes a post-training method where the model is trained in a specific way, similar to fine-tuning. You can foun additiona information about ai customer service and artificial intelligence and NLP. Much of the most crucial training data for AI models is technically owned by copyright holders.
The Information has learned that the hot AI startup has already demoed Strawberry to US national security officials. The report further says that Strawberry was able to solve the New York Times “Connections” word puzzle in an internal demo. ChatGPT has evolved significantly since it first launched in November 2022, adding a new memory feature, system prompts and of course custom chatbots in the form of GPTs. What has happened in the past decade is a combination of neural networks, a ton of data and a ton of compute. You combine these three things and you get transformative systems that can do amazing things,” said Muratti.
This advancement would not only improve the efficiency of AI-driven tasks but also contribute to more sophisticated interactions between users and AI systems. An AI with such deep access to personal information raises crucial privacy issues. OpenAI would need to ensure that users’ data is protected and used transparently. People need to trust that their information is secure and handled ethically. Given recent accusations that OpenAI hasn’t been taking safety seriously, the company may step up its safety checks for ChatGPT-5, which could delay the model’s release further into 2025, perhaps to June. However, OpenAI’s previous release dates have mostly been in the spring and summer.
2024 has been an eventful year at OpenAI and it could get even more exciting with the release of ChatGPT-5. The blog also learned that Microsoft plans to host Orion on Azure as early as November. Microsoft is one of OpenAI’s biggest partners, and its Copilot is built around ChatGPT.

OpenAI has also been adamant about maintaining privacy for Apple users through the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence. OpenAI has faced significant controversy over safety concerns this year, but appears to be doubling down on its commitment to improve safety and transparency. Before the year is out, OpenAI could also ChatGPT launch GPT-5, the next major update to ChatGPT. Chris Smith has been covering consumer electronics ever since the iPhone revolutionized the industry in 2008. When he’s not writing about the most recent tech news for BGR, he brings his entertainment expertise to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and other blockbuster franchises.
“It’s really good, like materially better,” said one CEO who recently saw a version of GPT-5. OpenAI demonstrated the new model with use cases and data unique to his company, the CEO said. He said the company also alluded to other as-yet-unreleased capabilities of the model, including the ability to call AI agents being developed by OpenAI to perform tasks autonomously.
The report also says the company could spend as much as $7 billion in 2024 to train and operate ChatGPT. OpenAI has banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts linked to an Iranian influence operation that was generating content about the U.S. presidential election. OpenAI identified five website fronts presenting as both progressive and conservative news outlets that used ChatGPT to draft several long-form articles, though it doesn’t seem that it reached much of an audience.
